Spectacular Skopelos

As I settle in to this island, I see why people have raved about it. And I can see why they chose it to film Mama Mia. I’ve been reading about the beaches here along the coast and perhaps the most difficult decision is to choose the beach for the day. After reading tons of blogs and posts I settle in on Limonari Beach at the south end of the island.

So many beaches to choose from!!

I am not quite ambitious enough to rent a car, so I take a taxi. I’m glad I did as the roads are winding with steep hills. There is a bus system but it doesn’t reach all the remote beaches.

The beach club here is beautiful. Called Apanema, it has sunbeds on the beach but also on the deck by the pool. The water is amazing for swimming and the taverna overlooks the sea. This is Greek life at its best.

Delicious and beautiful

I spend the day here – reading, swimming, eating and napping. The weather is amazing, in the mid-80s. I’m feeling very happy.

Late in the day I get a taxi to the next beach, Panormos, where I have heard is the best sunset. It’s a lovely time of day to be at a beach club. People are winding down the day, resting or playing cards. The water is so warm.

And now the sunset…

It’s just so beautiful.

I get back to the hotel after 8, take a shower and walk along the water into old town. Instead of a fancy dinner I get souvlaki from a food truck and then explore the back streets of this town.

Skopelos Old town, the back streets

Shops all around, hidden around each corner.

Local oil, honey and liquor. Skopelos is known for its Plum Liquor

I find a pottery shop that I love, a family owned shop where I could load up small suitcases with dishes and bowls.

What a lovely family, she shares the history of her shop and products

I already feel that I won’t have enough time here to fully see the island, especially the monasteries that are up in the hills.

It will be an early day, going on one of the many Mama Mia tours.

Going to see this iconic church…

Skopelos. Thumbs up.
