Another day another beach

The biggest decision each day is which beach to visit, almost as agonizing as which cafe to choose for coffee in the morning. The beach choice for the day is Vlychos, a short water taxi ride away. In the port the taxis line up with signs for each beach destination, leaving on the hour for several hours each morning. These beaches are similar yet each unique, and everyone here seems to have their favorite. Vlychos has beautiful clear water, it’s a pebble beach and I’m compelled to buy some water shoes so I don’t totally bite it when I get into the water. Again, it’s a form of mild entertainment watching people try to get in to the water, trying to balance over the slippery rocks. But it’s only funny when you are watching other people. But, ahhh, when you get into the water. It is so pure and clear and warm. The saltwater makes it easy to swim and float, even for me.

The family-run restaurant serves simple Greek food and the vibe just forces you to just slow down and enjoy it.

There is no schedule other than deciding which boat to catch back to town.

Vlychos
My task for the day

I’m immersed in this book based in Greece, starting in World War I spanning in to the early 2000s. It takes place in Thessaloniki, and helps to understand the complex political landscape in Greece. It reminds me of why Greeks are so loyal and protective of their country.

Another sunset mojito, another lovely dinner and a walk thru town.

One of my favorite parts of these trips is to talk to the shopkeepers, the waiters, the guy at the bakery whose family has owned the shop for 80 years. They all work hard, working 14 to 16 hour days, and they all hold deep pride in this island. As they are approaching the end of the season they all seem to be a little tired but remain kind. I read that these micro-interactions feed the soul and build your energy. I believe it.

The last full day here will be spent on a boat trip around the island, which I arranged via the beach club at Vlychos. I’ve been to Hydra several times but have never been all the way around.

Feeling content and happy.
